Am I a Choco Leibniz or Jaffa Cake?

Kate Marston - Friday, September 02, 2016

We belong to local networking group Tring Together BusinessMart. I recently had the pleasure of being their first ‘Brief Encounter’ – an interview which is posted out via e-newsletter to all Tring Together BusinessMart members. Read the interview here and find out which biscuit I am…

NAME Kate Marston
BUSINESS KM Design & Puddingstone Distillery

Describe your typical day
Day usually starts by checking and responding to emails followed by a full day of design – could be anything from a website, a new logo, brand guidelines or marketing literature. I usually have anywhere from 10-20 projects on the go at any one time so I will be switching between them and responding to clients, writing quotes and project managing website development and printing. There could be a client meeting too or a networking event. And that’s before I put in a few hours on Puddingstone Distillery in the evening!

What inspires you?
Travelling abroad. Getting out and about and doing stuff that scares me and takes me out of my comfort zone.

What were you like at High School?
Dreadfully shy.

What type of biscuit would you be and why?
Tough question but I asked my hubby, Ben, and he says I’m a dark chocolate Choco Leibniz! Because they’re sophisticated and understated but layered and multi-faceted. Plus they have decorative pattern. Wow! I was thinking more Jaffa Cake – indecisive! Is it a cake or is it a biscuit? I had to ask Ben as I just couldn’t decide what I was… so definitely a Jaffa Cake. Oh, look at that, I just made a decision!

What 3 things would you take to a desert island other than food and water?
Right now a desert island sounds perfect so probably some sun cream, a hammock and a satellite phone to call for a boat (or maybe a seaplane as I’ve always wanted to go in one!) when I was ready to leave.

What do you like most about BusinessMart?
It’s local so I get to know people as business contacts but also get to know people on a personal level. Makes for much stronger relationships. It’s a great, buzzing community.

Chiltern Ice Cream Company logo design

Kate Marston - Friday, August 12, 2016

At the start of the year we were approach by Arthur LaCour who was setting up a new ice cream company called the 'Chiltern Ice Cream Company'. As the name suggests they are based in the Chilterns, a region KM Design is proud to also be located. After completing our branding questionnaire and in Arthur's own words they wanted a logo that says 'Hey this is something different but in a non-intimidating way'.

Arthur's brief also required that the logo design says they're unique, a bit exclusive and a little edgy. We also needed to incorporate exceptional quality with an air of indulgence and aspiration. Plus the design needed to be clean, unfussy and uncluttered evoking every bit of imagery and adventurousness that Arthur described in the brief.

Four designs were presented and we were really pleased when the above was chosen (it was our favourite!). Ice cream production has just started and pots will soon be available in local restaurants, farm shops and cafés.

Branding and website design for Mobility Pitstop

Kate Marston - Friday, August 12, 2016

We've really enjoyed working with Mobility Pitstop on their new website design over the last few months. In order to achieve the desired outcome we initially worked on bringing the logo up to date with a new redrawn character, typography and colour scheme. We even introduced a female character for use on the website and e-newsletter. This was an important introduction as the client reported that some customers felt alienated by the male character which previously had been styled as a mechanic. Mobility Pitstop wanted to move away from this and make the characters more neutral. Below you can see before and after of the logo and character. We continued the illustrations onto website banners, vouchers and other printed materials. More images can be seen here.
